French Alps⎜Discover La Plagne
Hi guys !
We just came back from a great week at La Plagne, and we want to tell you everything about this ski station and this area 😉
But first, back on the trip !
From home to La Plagne : crossing the country
Yes, coming from our region, Morbihan, the road was long ... very long! It's exactly 1004 km to reach La Plagne from Vannes where we live. Aouch, how far it is! But hey, when we know what's waiting for us once there, we don't ask too much the question of the driving hours.
So to get less bored on the road and less tired as well, we decided to leave home on Saturday at 5pm, make a stop at Tours, and leave at 8am the next morning to arrive at La Plagne around 3pm. Long way! But honestly, we felt it pretty easy. The road seems immediately shorter, and we arrived right on time to get the apartment keys (this is usually done after 2pm).
So if you are going to La Plagne from really far, we advise you to do it in two stages. You'll be less tired when you'll arrive 😊 And start a ski week holiday when you are tired, that's not the best!
To get to La Plagne, the road was quite dangerous because of the snow from Aime La Plagne (the city in the valley). The week that had just passed and the snowfall forced us to put chains on the wheels. This is the boring moment of the trip! Put chains to reach the village. But everything went well, and we arrived on time for the keys delivery 😊
The apartment at Belle Plagne
For this week of winter sports, we stayed in an apartment in Belle Plagne, one of the highest village in the area. La Plagne includes seven villages (Aime 2000, Plagne 1800, Plagne Village, Plagne Centre, Plagne Soleil, Belle Côte, Belle Plagne) on the slopes (not counting the villages at lower altitude). The access is by car, but the originality of Belle Plagne is that there is no parking in this family resort (so no car) because everything is underground. This brings a lot of charm to the village and allows to walk quietly between buildings, without car, and without bitumen.
To rent the flat, we went through the website belleplagne.eu and we highly recommend this website.
It was the first time we had such a big apartment! 40m2 facing south and on the ski slopes: the dream!
The apartment was very functional, it had everything we needed: dishwasher, toaster, two coffee machines, hair dryer, wifi etc. A lot of storage space also that allowed us to feel at home from the beginning. Most of this apartment: the ski locker on the 1st floor with direct access to the slopes! Marie-Ange and Lionel, the owners, are adorable and allowed us to discover Belle Plagne and the area of La Plagne with all their advices. To give us the keys, Audrey from the Wikizi agency found us when we arrived at 3pm and made a flat tour with us. She also explained in detail the map of La Plagne, the slopes and showed us where were the points of interest like the shopping center, the shops, the ski rental, etc. This agency really offers a perfect service and follow you during your ski holidays.
The ski area of La Plagne
As I told you above, you have direct access to the slopes from the apartment. This is a great advantage that avoids you to take a free shuttle or walk to the ski lifts and so get tired before you even down your first slope.
We went to get our ski passes in the evening to be ready and start from 9am the next day (opening time of the ski lifts). Unfortunately we could not ski on Monday because of the weather 😕 So we took the opportunity to walk in the village and discover the resort center on foot.
And on Tuesday, the sky was blue, we finally got our skis and enjoy this perfectly fresh snow. Clack Clack, Clack Clack! Go! I don't know if you're like me, but I find the first sensations of skiing are the best. We find our supports, we challenge on balance and speed to see if we've lost anything since the last time. Just a few minutes to get back. It's great! Our skipass allowed us to go one day in Les Arcs (the ski station next to La Plagne), but we preferred staying all week on the field of La Plagne and were able to discover this beautiful area from all corners. And there is plenty to do! Because La Plagne is 225 km of slopes with:
- 19 black slopes
- 34 red slopes
- 72 blue slopes
- 9 green slopes
- 2 glaciers
- 1 fun slope
- 1 snowpark
- 3 boardercross
- 1 luge slope
- and 2 big airbags
But also 77 ski lifts and 70% of the slopes located above 2000m altitude.
It would be hard to say that there is not enough! It is not for nothing that La Plagne (connected to Les Arcs) is the second largest ski area in the world (and one of the most beautiful for skiing in France 😉)! In addition, slopes and even off slopes are high quality, wide and groomed every night (Arthur even called it the "groomers' ball").
Needless to say, we loved La Plagne. Notably thanks to a great diversity of landscapes, incredible views of the Mont-Blanc, a 360° panorama of the French Alps, good skiing at any time of the day with varied slopes and a domain accessible to all levels of skiers (downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, off slopes skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing ...).
Here are some pictures to give you a glimpse of the immensity and beauty of this area.

Rental of ski equipment:
If you do not have your ski equipment with you, we recommend that you rent it at Sport 2000 Armand Bérard. The quality is top and the staff super nice! Ask Thibault and say that you come from us 😉 And most importantly, rent a helmet even if you think you don't need it. It's for your safety (and more, it keeps you warm!).
If you drive to go to La Plagne, don't forget the chains for the car, even if the weather is nice and roads are clear when you leave, you never know! If you have winter tires, normally you can go there without any problems.
Fly your drone at La Plagne:
You may be wondering, but yes, you can fly your drone up in the mountains. In any case, in La Plagne, it is allowed in some places. So we took the advantage! On the other hand it is necessary to pay super attention to the conditions, and to prepare well its material because of the temperatures. Feel free to ask any question in the comment box below 😉
And you guys, what's your favorite ski station ? Is it in France ? 😀
